Sharadhama  Sharadamma

Sharadhama (aged 40 years) lives in Golarahatti village, Jaglur taluk.  Sharadhama grew up in Golarahatti. She was married at the age of 20 years and moved to her husband’s village. Within a few years of marriage, her husband left her. With no support and any source of income, she returned to her parents village, Golarahatti. Determined not to be a burden on her parents, she asked them for space in their house to set up a petty shop. She borrowed money from a local financer paying an interest of 48% per annum and started her petty shop. She grew her business from a petty shop to a small hotel within a period of 10 years. In these ten years, she built her own house financed through her savings (collected daily from her earnings) and a government subsidy. Today, she runs her hotel in her house earning Rs. 300 per day. She approached Chaitanya for a loan to invest in her petty shop and hotel business. She was given a loan of Rs. 10,000 from Chaitanya which she has used to invest in her business to further expand her business. Sharadhama is keen to quickly pay her existing loan and go in for a higher loan amount.

Balkis Banu (photo not put up on client request)aged 45 years, lives in Jaglur town with her husband and two children. Balkis Banu and her husband run a biscuit and cake making micro enterprise. They started their business soon after their marriage 20 years back. Today, Balkis, her husband and one helper run the microenterprise. Work in the bakery starts daily at 3.00 AM in the morning when the dough prepared on the previous day has to be put in the firewood oven for baking. Balkis husband does this in the morning. After doing this, he leaves home at 5.30 AM, to do sales of the finished products to petty shops in villages in and around Jaglur. Balkis Banu finishes her household chores and comes to the microenterprise by 9.00 AM. At the bakery she manages the procurement, production and packing of the items with the help of Rafiq, their helper. Although, Balkis Banu has a thriving business she has not approached a bank till date for a loan as she believes that banks will not give her a loan easily. When Balkis learn’t about Chaitanya, she immediately applied for a loan. She was sanctioned a loan of Rs. 10,000 which she has invested in her business.

 

Shaina Banu

Shaina

Shaina Banu (photograph not put on request of client) aged 35 years, is a beedi (thin handmade Indian cigarette) contractor at Jaglur. She purchases raw materials for making beedi’s and distributes it to around 10 households around her house. Women in these households, roll beedis and supply it back to Shaina. Shaina sells these beedies to shops in and around Jaglur. Each household makes 500 beedis per day and in total, Shaina produces around 5000 beedis in a day. Shaina wanted finance to expand her business to increase her raw material purchase. Shaina approached Chaitanya for a loan and was sanctioned Rs. 10,000 which she immediately invested in her beedi contract business.
